Since its launch at the New York Climate Summit in September 2014, the UNEP-led Global District Energy in Cities Initiative has worked with partners to build a global program that will meet the core objectives of the Initiative: increasing global awareness of district energy; promoting and strengthening local and national policies; and helping cities create an environment that attracts investment. The release of the UNEP flagship report on district energy in February was a significant step towards achieving these objectives. The Initiative's focus is now shifting towards increasing the awareness of district energy at COP21 and other international events and implementing local demonstration projects in the five initial pilot countries of India, China, Colombia, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
